Grampians - Victoria

With a long history of winemaking, the rugged, rocky peaks of the Grampians form the dramatic backdrop to a region known as the birthplace of Australia""s sparkling wine industry. Founded in the 1860s, the district of Great Western lends its name to the best known sparkling wine in Australia. Take a tour of Seppelt""s National Trust-classified underground tunnels or visit the rustic cellar door of Best""s Great Western. Today the Grampians wine region includes vineyards and wineries around the city of Ararat and the townships of Buangor, Great Western and Halls Gap. The region is best known for table wines, especially shiraz and riesling, with chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, and cabernet sauvignon adding to the richness and diversity.
